Amerge and Heart Problems
Recommendations Concerning Amerge and Heart ProblemsPeople with certain heart problems should not take Amerge. This includes people with:
- Coronary heart disease (more commonly referred to as just heart disease)
- Stable angina
- Unstable angina
- Variant angina (also known as Prinzmetal's angina).
Also, people who have a history of a heart attack, stroke, or transient ischemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke") should not take Amerge.
Amerge should be used with caution in people who have possible risk factors for heart disease. In fact, you should be evaluated for heart disease before taking Amerge if you smoke or have any of the following heart disease risk factors:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High cholesterol
- A family history of heart disease.
Men over the age of 40 and postmenopausal women should also be evaluated for heart disease before taking Amerge.
If you have any risk factors for heart disease, it is also strongly recommended that you take your first dose of Amerge in your healthcare provider's office (in order to monitor your heart).
Whether or not you have risk factors for heart disease, call your healthcare provider or 911 right away if you have any possible heart attack symptoms (such as chest pain, chest tightness, or shortness of breath) with Amerge.
