Delayed Release Valproic Acid Dosage

The recommended delayed release valproic acid dosage for treating mania associated with bipolar disorder is 750 mg total daily (divided into two or more smaller doses). For migraine prevention, the usual starting dose is 250 mg twice daily. If needed, your healthcare provider can increase your dosage to 500 mg twice daily. For epilepsy treatment, dosing is determined by body weight.

Dosing of Delayed Release Valproic Acid: An Introduction

The dose of delayed release valproic acid (Stavzor™) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The medical condition being treated (bipolar disorder, migraines, or seizures)
  • Your weight
  • Other medications you may be taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Migraine Dosage
For migraine prevention, the recommended starting dose of this medication is 250 mg twice daily. If needed, your healthcare provider can increase your dose, up to 500 mg twice daily.

Mania Dosage
The recommended starting dosage for treating mania associated with bipolar disorder is 750 mg total per day (divided into two or more smaller doses per day). Your healthcare provider will probably increase your dose rapidly in order to control your bipolar disorder symptoms.

Epilepsy Dosage
The recommended starting dose for complex partial seizures is based on your weight -- 10 to 15 mg per kg of body weight total per day (about 4.5 to 6.8 mg per pound total per day). For complex or partial absence seizures, the starting dose is 15 mg per kg total per day (about 6.8 mg per pound total per day).

For either type of seizures, if the total daily dose is more than 250 mg, it should be split up into two or three smaller doses per day. Your healthcare provider will probably increase your dose slowly until your seizures are controlled or until you experience bothersome side effects.
