Delayed Release Valproic Acid

Delayed release valproic acid is a prescription medicine used for treating epilepsy. By increasing GABA (a brain chemical) and affecting sodium channels in the brain, it can help prevent certain types of seizures. The medication is also approved to treat bipolar mania and prevent migraine headaches. Delayed release valproic acid comes in soft gel capsule form and is available in three different strengths.

What Is Delayed Release Valproic Acid?

Delayed release valproic acid (Stavzor™) is a prescription medication used to treat the following conditions:

Epilepsy -- approved to treat complex partial seizures and simple or complex absence seizures
Mania -- approved to treat manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder (manic depression)
Migraines -- approved to help prevent migraine headaches (but the drug does not help treat a headache once it starts).

Potential Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.

Some of the most common side effects include, but are not limited to:

Nausea
Drowsiness
Dizziness
Vomiting.
