Drug Interactions With Frovatriptan (Cont.)

Frovatriptan Interactions Explained

Certain Antidepressants
Taking frovatriptan with certain depression medications, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), can cause a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. These symptoms include: confusion, hallucinations, a fast heartbeat, feeling faint, fever, sweating, muscle spasms, difficulty walking, and diarrhea. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be very dangerous.

Ergot Medications
Taking frovatriptan with ergot medications can increase your risk of dangerous side effects. Do not take frovatriptan and ergot medications within 24 hours of each other.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
It can be very dangerous to combine MAOIs with triptans (migraine medications similar to frovatriptan). Taking them together can greatly increase the level of the migraine medication in your blood, increasing your risk of dangerous side effects. You should not take most triptans if you have taken an MAOI within the past two weeks.

However, MAOIs seem to have less of an effect on frovatriptan. The manufacturer does not warn against using the two medications together and does not recommended changing the dose of frovatriptan. However, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider before combining frovatriptan with an MAOI, as it is best to be more cautious when using these medications together.

Triptans
Taking frovatriptan with other triptans can increase your risk of serious side effects. These medications should not be taken within 24 hours of each other.
