If you are a person who experiences migraines, you may be interested in a class of medications called triptans. These prescription drugs are not meant to prevent migraines; rather, they are taken to treat a migraine that is already occurring. Triptans help relieve symptoms by narrowing blood vessels in the head that become dilated during a migraine.
In most cases, triptans are taken by mouth. However, some are available as injections (which can also be used for cluster headaches) or nasal sprays. Some triptans come as orally disintegrating tablets that dissolve rapidly in the mouth.
Common side effects of triptans include:
- Dry mouth
