Headache Home > Generic Cambia

Because Cambia is protected by patents, no generic version of this medication is available at this time. The first patent is set to expire in 2017, which is the earliest predictable date that a generic Cambia may be manufactured. It is important to note that diclofenac is the "generic name" of Cambia; it is not, however, a generic version of the drug.

Generic Cambia: An Overview

Cambia™ (diclofenac potassium) is a prescription migraine medication. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that comes in the form of a powder that is mixed with water.

Cambia is made by Kowa Pharmaceuticals America, Inc. There are no generic versions of Cambia available at this time.

When Will a Generic Version of Cambia Be Available?

The first patent for Cambia is currently set to expire in May 2017. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of Cambia could become available. However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period of Cambia. This could include such things as lawsuits or new Cambia patents.

Is Diclofenac a Generic Cambia?

No -- diclofenac is the active ingredient in Cambia (as well as several other medications), but it is not a generic version of Cambia. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of a drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer would make the product.
