Headache Home > Benefits of Feverfew

Feverfew is used for numerous conditions, but it is most often used to prevent migraines. Of all the possible feverfew uses, however, only migraine prevention has convincing scientific evidence to suggest that the herbal supplement may help. Because feverfew has not been extensively studied, its benefits are not fully understood.

What Benefits Can Feverfew Provide?

Feverfew is an herb that is often used to prevent migraine headaches. It is actually a perennial flower that grows in many parts of world, including North America. Feverfew is sometimes used for the following conditions:

Of all the possible feverfew uses, only migraine prevention has convincing scientific evidence to suggest that feverfew may help (see Feverfew for Migraines). As with many supplements, claims of feverfew's benefits are sometimes exaggerated, and these claims must be evaluated critically. Most importantly, it is essential to remember that natural products should not be used carelessly, as many natural products can be quite toxic (for instance, many poisons are natural products).

Traditionally, feverfew has been used by women to prevent miscarriages. However, it is probably not effective for this use, and there is some evidence that it could actually increase the risk of miscarriages or premature labor, since feverfew may cause uterine contractions (see Feverfew and Pregnancy).
