A drug that is available by prescription only, topiramate (Topamax®) is approved for the following uses:
 
By slowing electrical signals in the brain, the medication can help prevent seizures. It can also prevent migraines from occurring by calming nerve cells in the brain that become overly excited. In clinical studies, side effects included drowsiness, weight loss, and fatigue.
 
This medication is not suitable for everyone. For example, people with glaucoma, kidney disease, or certain allergies may not be able to take it. Before starting treatment, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of your medical history and any medications you are taking.
