Alternative Migraine Prevention Strategies

As part of your migraine prevention program, you may also consider alternative or complementary prevention options for migraines. Some of these approaches may be used instead of traditional treatments (known as alternative treatments). Others may be used alongside traditional treatments (known as complementary treatments). What If I Get a Migraine?

If you find that your migraine prevention techniques are not working, talk with your healthcare provider. Together, you can come up with a treatment plan to manage your headaches. Sometimes, at the onset of a migraine, lying down in a dark room with a cold pack can help.

Stress management techniques, such as relaxation and massage, can also help limit pain. They may also make attacks happen less often. Keep over-the-counter pain medications handy. In your migraine diary, make a list of home treatment methods that work for you in different situations.
