Alternative Strategies for Preventing MigrainesAs part of your migraine prevention program, you may also consider alternative or complementary prevention options for migraines. Some of these approaches may be used instead of traditional treatments (known as alternative treatments). Others may be used alongside traditional treatments (known as complementary treatments). These strategies may include:
- Vitamins, minerals, or herbs, such as feverfew (see Feverfew for Migraines), butterbur root extract (Petadolex®), riboflavin, or magnesium
- Biofeedback (see Biofeedback for Migraines)
- Acupuncture (see Acupuncture for Migraines)
- Botulinum toxin (Botox®)
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Relaxation therapy.
What If I Get a Migraine? If you find that your migraine prevention techniques are not working, talk with your healthcare provider. Together, you can come up with a treatment plan to manage your headaches. Sometimes, at the onset of a migraine, lying down in a dark room with a cold pack can help.
