Sumavel Drug Interactions
Sumavel Drug Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Sumavel is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Taking Sumavel with certain depression medications can cause a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. These symptoms include:
- Fast heartbeat
- Feeling faint
- Muscle spasm
- Difficulty walking
Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be very dangerous.
There are special warnings for MAOIs. Taking Sumavel with a type A MAOI can greatly increase the amount of Sumavel in your blood, increasing your chance of dangerous Sumavel side effects. Do not take Sumavel if you have used a type A MAOI within the last two weeks. Although selegiline and rasagiline are usually considered to be type B MAOIs, they may also be MAO-A inhibitors when used at high doses. Ask your healthcare provider before taking Sumavel with selegiline or rasagiline.
Taking Sumavel with ergot medications can increase your risk of dangerous side effects. Do not take these drugs within 24 hours of each other.
Combining Sumavel with other triptans can increase your risk of serious side effects. These medications should not be taken within 24 hours of each other.
