Topiramate Side Effects
Side effects in children are similar to the side effects of topiramate in adults. Some of the additional common side effects seen in children (but not adults) include:
- Irritated or runny nose
- Hair loss (see Topamax Hair Loss)
- Increased salivation
Some side effects with topiramate occur in 3 percent or less of those taking the drug. Because these side effects are so uncommon, it is difficult to tell whether they are actually caused by topiramate or other factors.
Some of these less common side effects include but are not limited to:
- Flushing or hot flashes
- High cholesterol or low cholesterol
- Decreased sex drive (libido) or premature ejaculation (see Topamax Sexual Side Effects)
- Ear infection
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Sensitivity to the sun
- Blurred vision
- Urinary tract infection (bladder infection).
You may experience some or none of the topiramate side effects described in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a medicine that you have never tried. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be a topiramate side effect, your healthcare provider should be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
